To honor legendary director, Mike Nichols, THE WIFE’s Movie Night pick is the groundbreaking hit, The Graduate. This 1967 classic is one of the key films of the late 1960s, and helped to set in motion a new era of film-making. In 1968 Nichols won the Academy Award for Best Director for the film. The influential movie is a biting satire/comedy about a recent nebbish, East Coast college graduate who finds himself alienated and adrift in the shifting, social and sexual mores of the 60s, and questioning the values of society.
The Graduate tells the story of 20-year-old Benjamin Braddock (played by a 29-year-old Dustin Hoffman), a recent college graduate with no well-defined aim in life, who is seduced by an older woman, Mrs. Robinson (a 35-year-old Anne Bancroft), and then proceeds to fall in love with her daughter Elaine (Katharine Ross).

Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater’s “Boyhood” is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha.
“Boyhood” charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay’s Yellow to Arcade Fire’s Deep Blue. “Boyhood” is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It’s impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey. The Perfect Summer film for THE WIFE™ and her husband!
