THE WIFE’s Gluten and Dairy Free Guide to Los Angeles:

Gluten Free Guide to Los Angeles

Everyone should know that Real Food Daily’s waffles are NOT gluten-free. (I asked before going to meet friends for brunch at the Santa Monica RFD.) The recipe contains no gluten but the waffles are made on the same waffle iron as gluten-containing waffles, so the cross-contact makes them hazardous to those of us on a medically-necessary gluten-free diet. Be careful out there, folks! (That’s why proper training and certification/accreditation are so important. Few LA restaurants can be bothered, and they are putting our well-being at risk as a result.)

Mrs.

Try these GF restaurants. The Border Grill and The Counter. Excellent. The Counter has burgers with GF buns and ingredients, and you design your own, and they have GF Beer. Not as good as Addiction Bistro in my view but there are several The Counter restaurants in LA and they are larger. The Border Grill downtown and elsewhere has an extensive GF menu and the food is excellent.

How is Hugo’s not on your list? Best Gluten free food I have found in LA!

I have heard that Dominoes is not very careful with keeping their gf separate from their regular pizzas, so I’d be careful there.
Also! Fresh Brothers does both g/f and d/f pizza that are fantastic!

#8 Gracia on 02.01.14 at 3:43 pm

Saint’s and Sinner’s bakery in Venice is an amazing place. Virtually all the items are gluten free and the owner is a huge resource.

#9 Angela on 03.05.14 at 6:36 am

Also Fresh Brothers is pretty amazing. They deliver and have a separate kitchen and dedicated ovens for their gluten free pizza and wings. They also offer vegan cheese.

Hugo’s isn’t Celiac safe. I got sick eating there and later they told me they can’t garuntee anything on their menu is safe for people with true food allergies and Celiacs.

It’s great to have gluten-free and dairy-free options.

Question is whether or not they are GMO-free as well…otherwise, you’re just making a trade-off. CORN & Strawberries are the Worst
things to eat! Oink oink.
GMOs are the cause of Gluten intolerance. Wheat specifically is sprayed with glysophate…an herbicide used to kill weeds.
And lactose intolerance is due to pasteurization which damages the delicate enzyme lactase, which is required to digest the milk sugar lactose.
Trying to find GMO-free restaurants that offer Gluten-free AND Dairy-free is next to Impossible…with the exception of Cafe Gratitude. And how many times can you eat at the SAME cafe?!
I need variety.

SAGE is not good for a Candida diet…which is no sugar, no dairy, and I prefer no gluten…they have Nothing to offer! Their pasta is made with Corn! A Grain! And most likely a GMO…it’s Processed! UNHEALTHY!!! Grrrr.

#12 Lindy on 10.15.14 at 7:07 pm

Cruzer Pizza in LA is also vegan and gluten-free!It’s good!

#13 Lindy on 10.15.14 at 7:10 pm

Yeah, i dont recommend Hugos. I have a dairy allergy and told the waiter. He said there was no dairy in it when i asked him just to be sure. Then, he brings it out i take a bite and spit it out…it was covered in BUTTER. I confronted him and he said “i told you there was no dairy in the food. I didnt say it wasnt ON the food.”

#14 Rachel Hall on 10.19.14 at 12:14 pm

Great list and vey helpful for an overseas visitor like me
Evo and Shophouse Kitchen were great for dinner and you saved me hours of research and driving around to find somewhere that caters for GF and DF in LA – thanks

Wanted to add Melting Pot has dynamite true gluten free menu. Their bread is great and the desert plate at the end is 10 times better than the non gluten free desert plate.

Also one of my all time favorite gluten free bakers is Clara Cakes. The one’s listed are, meh – just way way too much sugar in the product. Clara Cakes tastes like real cupcakes from fluffy not too heavily sugared heaven.

What about SunCafe?
They have a killer dairy-free/ gluten free Mac N Cheese.
The whole place is raw vegan, so there are plenty of options!
I also eat this way:)

#17 Steph on 02.16.15 at 6:00 pm

Great list! This was a life-saver for a brunch date this weekend. The Peet’s Coffee near me (South Bay) offers almond milk as well, which I would think would be a chain-wide implementation, so you might be able to update your list.

#18 Kristen on 03.15.15 at 9:09 pm

some great spots you should add :) susiecakes, 800 degrees pizza (by far most real tasting, rising hearts bakery, M cafe, Pulse, Blue Daisy

#19 Scott on 06.14.15 at 10:38 pm

In ‘n’ Out is not celiac friendly. I asked the manager and he said that “gluten free” items are cooked on the same surface as items containing gluten. Cross-contamination is likely there.

#20 Robert on 08.26.15 at 7:15 am

Honestly there are hardly any places where Celiacs are 100 percent safe to eat at but that’s a burden we have to live with until a cure is found…however, I have had great experience with Hugo’s. They handle cc better than almost any restaurant I’ve been to.

#21 MAra on 01.08.16 at 6:02 pm

Do not forget VROMAGE a vegan cheese paradise.

#22 Anne on 06.06.16 at 7:15 am

Real Food Daily, the classic since the 80’s and continuously good. Weho, Pasadena and LAX int’l terminal locations. Organic, no GMO’s, vegan with lots of gluten free options

#23 Flo on 07.14.16 at 5:05 pm

Erin McKenna’s Bakery in Larchmont! Gluten free and vegan cupcakes, donuts, cookies etc.

#24 Veronica on 09.03.16 at 2:23 pm

Thanks for this, after seeing a nutritionist for a diet to help keep my autoimmune problem in check, I’ve been placed on a strict diet. Problem is I’m only 16 and I miss a lot of tasty foods, this helps a lot :).
