May Day: Flower Crowns

May 1st is May Day, the commemoration of Spring; celebrated by wearing delicate flower crowns, filling baskets with beautiful colorful flowers and dancing around the Maypole in honor of the cheerful season. THE WIFE enlisted master party planner David Rodgers and extraordinary florist Joseph Free to make DIY Floral crowns to celebrate the arrival of Spring. All you need are a few tools to create floral headdresses for you and your children to join in on the festivities, click “continue reading” for supplies, instructions and more images. What You’ll Need:

  • Floral Wire
  • Green Floral Tape
  • Wire Pliers
  • Assortment of Flowers of your choice (We used Pansies)

Directions:

  1. Floral crowns are mean to sit around the forehead. So first you want to make sure the wire fits around the intended head. Use a tape measure and cut or piece together the wire for your desired size.
  2. Using your green floral tape, wrap the tape around the wire covering the wire completely.
  3. Once the wire is covered with green floral tape, you’ll need to choose your flowers. Once your flowers are chosen, cut the flowers leaving a 1 inch stem attached.
  4. Starting at one end of the covered wire, leave 3 inches at the top to tie once you are finished. Use your green floral tape and begin taping the floral stems to the wire. Continue this step attaching as many or as few flowers as you desire with each flower overlapping the previous stem until the wire is completely covered, leaving a few inches at the bottom.
  5. Twist both ends together making a circle and secure your floral crown. Enjoy May Day! -Taryn Cox for THE WIFE
