“Are You a Good Wife?”
February 10th, 2011 — About Me, Article
Are you a good wife?
Tip No. 8: A good wife always cooks a big Saturday or Sunday breakfast for her family.
Apparently, I’m not a good wife.
I’m lucky if I shave my legs every week or every other week. I wear enough flannel to bed for a camp out. And I’d rather spend my weekend mornings playing tennis.
And yet, there is a part of me that admires the June Cleavers of the world.
So when I heard about The Wife, I wanted to meet the woman behind the website. Taryn Cox’s blog, in her words, “is based on my philosophies, beliefs, and aspirations of being a good wife.”
Feminists may cringe. But Taryn has a loyal following of women who are nostalgic for the ’50s, women who want, as one of her readers writes, to dress to the nines to serve her husband a mean martini after he gets home from a hard day at the office, even if they’ve just had a hard day at the office.
I met Taryn for lunch one Sunday and she arrived looking fabulous in high heels, handing me a tidy box of cookies wrapped in ribbon.
The first thing she told me is that she isn’t actually a wife. Now it was starting to make sense. Because I don’t know any wives who are trying to be better wives, only wives who are trying to make their husbands be better husbands.
But then I found out that Taryn is a domestic assistant so she does know a little bit about the gig. Taryn works for Monica Rosenthal, the actress who played Ray’s sister-in-law on “Everybody Loves Raymond,” and the wife of Phil Rosenthal, the man who created the sitcom. A philanthropist, Monica leaves the day to day household tasks to Taryn: planning birthday parties, picking out the children’s wardrobes, grocery shopping and running errands.
“It’s strange,” Taryn says. “But I love doing the dishes and laundry.” Especially in a dress, preferably vintage.
An Essay
February 2nd, 2011 — About Me
When I had learned that Lily, 13 years old, was asked to write an essay on a person who inspires her I was pleasantly surprised and overly flattered when she had chosen me. The words Lily wrote have touched my heart. I just adore her and am thrilled to be a part of her life and get the opportunity to watch her grow up. After recently reading this I had to share her words with my readers. - Taryn Cox for THE WIFE.
What can I say about the lovely, talented and amazing Taryn Lindsey Cox? When I first met Taryn she was wearing a blue, Marc Jacobs dress, her hair in a ponytail and black flats. What a perfect role model? Taryn is all about style, her manners and of course her love of the 1950’s. But, this is about 50% of Taryn’s interests. The other 50% is about one word-Wife. Taryn’s life, you could say, is all planned out. A big, white wedding, 4 kids, a husband and 2 dogs. Perfect.
Taryn is so fun. She is the one who knows how to have a good time. For Halloween we carved pumpkins and made caramel apples but, my favorite thing to do with Taryn on a cloudy day, is go out to lunch and see a movie. We love the same types movies. When were in the theater and a trailer comes on, we look at each other and say “I wanna see that.”
Taryn is like my big sister or second mom. But, more like me. When Taryn comes to take care of me and my brother when my parents are away, the one thing I say is. “But, you have to pick out my out fit tomorrow.” The number one thing Taryn always has, is style. Lets just say she never leaves the house with out it. It’s funny because she’ll wear something and I’ll say it looks weird…one year later…Taryn can you get me… That thing! I’m crazy but Taryn always knows.
Taryn is the best cook, like ever. I love when she cooks for us. She always puts on fun music to cook to and its so funny because she sings and dances around the kitchen, like Cinderella. Over all Taryn is a sweet, caring, motherly, fashionable, accomplished women I dream of being when I grow up. She is the best role model a girl can have, and I feel so lucky to even know here, let alone her being like the big sister I’ve always dreamed of.

Kelly Wearstler Hosts a Dinner Party for Jo Malone
January 12th, 2011 — About Me, The Social Butterfly
Edie Parker and John Demsey
Amid the holiday party rush, Kelly Wearstler opened up her landmark Beverly Hills manse on Thursday for a 40-person Jo Malone dinner and event that drew Peggy Moffitt, Liz Goldwyn, Shiva Rose, Amanda Goldberg, Jennifer Morrison and David and Elizabeth Netto.
“I’m hoping that these dinners become a regular occurrence,” noted Estée Lauder global president John Demsey. The festive crowd moved from the flower-laden black-and-white-striped table to the living room for dessert as a DJ stationed in the marble staircase spun Eartha Kitt and Ella Fitzgerald standards.
“I’m getting one last party in while I can,” said a nine-months-pregnant Lulu de Kwiatkowski. - WWD.Com

Fall Family Tradition: Apple Picking
September 14th, 2010 — About Me, Activities, Things I Love
Every year, it is the Cox Family tradition to go apple picking in the Fall. We get up early and drive out to Glen Oak… normally to wait in line for mini apple cinnamon donuts at Snowline Orchard. But this year to our surprise there was no line and no crowd! How lucky! After asking it seems apple picking season tends to get very popular and crowded the last week of September and into October. So I would highly suggest if your planning on going, the first 3 weeks of September are best.

Seu Jorge ended his North American tour Saturday with a concert at Club Nokia in downtown L.A., but those in the know flocked to West Hollywood’s Palihouse Friday night for a more intimate performance. Liz Goldwyn, Tara Subkoff, and blogger Taryn Cox—“I love Seu Jorge!”—came for the impromptu private concert by the Brazilian musician and his band, Almaz. The mastermind behind the sound track to Wes Anderson’s The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou, who recently released the self-titled album Seu Jorge and Almaz, kept the crowd, including jewelry designer Loree Rodkin, moving to his Brazilian pop samba. Even Seu Jorge’s kids got in on the festivities, singing and dancing onstage, much to the delight of friends such as director Michel Gondry and producer Mario Caldato Jr.. Later in the evening, model Devon Aoki and artist Piero Golia were spotted at the after-party on the roof, andParenthood costars Sam Jaeger and Erika Christensen lounged nearby. If you missed Seu Jorge’s tour this time around, fear not. The musician isn’t headed back to Brazil just yet. With plans to stay in Los Angeles for at least another month, Seu Jorge said, “We are so glad to be here. Now is the time to influence the world with music.”

Mulberry Dinner Party, Part One
August 9th, 2010 — About Me, The Social Butterfly
(A very British Dinner of Fish and Chips)
If you followed the trail of glitter through the Chateau Marmont Tuesday night, you found yourself magically transported to a private dinner party hosted by Mulberry. “It’s like ‘Hansel and Gretel,’ ” explained Mulberry creative directorEmma Hill of the event, which, she explained, borrowed from multiple cultural reference points, like Valley of the Dolls “and some naughty English royalty.”
To that end, Hill had the pool at the Chateau surrounded by larger-than-life (glitter-covered, of course!) leopards and hung sparkling roses from the trees. Taking in the spectacle—and Mulberry’s new fall line—were guests like Kelly Osbourne, Jessica Joffe (in a Thakoon tie-dye dress that matched the psychedelic-inspired scene perfectly), Jessica Stroup, and Nathalie Love, all of whom were given masks and Fuji instant cameras to capture the festivities. “I want delicious!” Cat Deeley called out to her tablemates, camera in hand, while Kate Bosworth (who was wearing her own Fashion’s Night Out T-shirt) fended off playful punches from Hill. “I love her,” Hill said, laughing. “I really love her!” After the dinner, the evening’s DJ, Alexa Chung, kept the night going as Teen Vogue’s Andrew Bevan danced with Gia Coppola until the wee hours of the morning.

“Hits and Mrs.”
May 16th, 2010 — About Me, Article
“Hits and Mrs.”
A new generation of female bloggers is championing the importance of being a good wife and partner. - Whtiney Friedlander for The Los Angeles Times
Wouldn’t it be easier to stop the juggling act and be a housewife and a helpmate? Wouldn’t it be better for her spouse and children if she were to opt for a more traditional role — full-time wife, full-time mom, full-time writer of thank-you notes — a choice that continues to be embraced by many forces in our culture?
Consider this: Three-quarters of Americans believe both partners should contribute to the household income, according to a Pew Research Center study from October. Meanwhile, only 37% of mothers who work outside the home want to be working full time, that same study reported.
Maybe those women are just tired, stressed out by the complications of everyday life amid a recession. Maybe it’s easier to idealize so-called simpler times (1945 to ‘65 anyone?) amid difficult ones. Or perhaps we should examine the role of pop culture and TV, which has a tendency to clothe domestic life in perfect little cocktail dresses.
After all, the much watched women of Wisteria Lane seem to be more interested in “feminine arts” such as gossiping and scheming than in holding down a corporate gig. The housewives of the Camelot-era “Mad Men” seem to have nothing better to do than mix martinis, look fabulous and inspire a partnership with Banana Republic and a slew of cocktail recipes that are listed on sites such as Oprah.com.
» Don’t miss a thing. Get breaking news alerts delivered to your inbox.
Whatever the source of their inspiration, a small contingent of women are turning to the Internet to champion the importance of being a good wife and partner. Some of their voices are sincere and straightforward. Others toy with the notion of 1950s housewifery, viewing it through a lens that seems clouded with nostalgia. It seems doubtful any of them would endear themselves to the editors of Ms. Magazine, but they have tapped into a longing.
There are bloggers like Kathi Browne, a fortysomething mother of three in Maryville, Tenn., who stopped working in the corporate world after her third child was born and summarizes her philosophy at Wingspouse.com as “an alternative to the traditional career choices some executive spouses are forced to make. Rather than requiring a choice between a career or family, the wingspouse career unites the two — creating a partnership between the executive and the spouse, and leading to mutual success.”
A wingspouse can help analyze an executive’s ideas without fear of reprisals — or theft. A wingspouse might accompany his or her partner to a speaking event and help work the room — or simply stand back and read people to see if the message is getting across. Or provide comfort on the home front. “Another wingspouse shared her secret to making her husband feel settled sooner,” Browne blogged last December. “She hangs the same plaque in the front entrance of every home they move to.”
A wingspouse can be a man or a woman, but Browne acknowledges that she believes she is writing primarily for women.
In the San Diego area, Kelley Lilien, 30, a graphic designer and work-from-home mother of two, lets her inner eccentric housewife run free with MrsLilien.com. Hers is a splashy website with themed posts on perfect picnic outfits and snacks or Grace Kelly tributes, each entry enhanced by a fanciful poem.
Keeping everything tongue-in-cheek, Lilien also extols the virtues of another nuclear family stereotype, the mother’s little helper. She is not afraid to mention booze, pills and retail therapy on her blog. While her alter ego might be the one to show up at your cousin’s wedding in a T-shirt-length magenta kaftan to match her super-sized Cosmopolitan cocktail, the real-life Mrs. Lilien is slightly more subdued, happily affixing her fingers with the cocktail rings her husband gives her each Valentine’s Day, never leaving the house without lipstick and believing that a good dinner party “is just what life’s about.”
And then there’s Taryn Cox, who isn’t afraid to put it all out there, unabashedly writing about stereotypically uxorial topics ranging from themed baby showers and creating her own cocktail-style dresses to the art of ironing a newspaper and how to clean with vodka at a blog she has titled TarynCoxTheWife.com.
Cox’s posts showcase classic glamour and gorgeous parties as songs such as “Sunny Side of the Street” play in the background.
“I’ve always just been so completely fascinated by the idea of marriage and dedication,” says Cox, a trim 26-year-old with a penchant for pastels and an e-mail address that starts with “stepfordwife.”
No, she’s not married and she doesn’t have kids, but “this [blog] is for those dreams and fantasies. I believe my own vision. I believe there’s an art to being a good wife.”
Growing up in Newport Beach as an only child to a single mom, Cox says her enthusiasm for the wife-and-mother role grew when she saw all her elementary school friends getting picked up at the curb when school let out and she was shuttled off to the YMCA for after-school care. Her blog, where the word “wife” is written in capital letters, includes rules for domestic bliss (WIFE rule No. 17: “The perfect WIFE should shave her legs every day or every other day.” WIFE rule No. 14: “The perfect WIFE should have the most beautiful and neat handwriting. This always comes in handy when writing Thank You notes, Addressing Cards, and Sharing Recipes”).
While not blogging, she’s parlayed years of personal assistant gigs for the likes of Lindsay Lohan and Scarlett Johansson into her current position as a domestic assistant and organizer for philanthropist Monica Rosenthal and her husband, TV producer Phil Rosenthal. Cox says it should give her plenty of practice for her planned life, as she helps with grocery shopping, organizing dinner parties and other duties.
Cox says she’s one of the first people her friends call when they get engaged, possibly because of her two giant binders of articles about wedding and party planning.
So, what’s her dating life like? Cox is somewhat mum on that, saying she usually dates only men she meets through mutual friends.
“[But] I’ve always been told I have very high expectations when it comes to dating men, which I always found to be an overexaggerated statement,” Cox says. “I think my expectations are not over the top but should be the norm. I think it’s important for a man to practice opening doors, calling instead of sending a text, putting forth the effort to make plans in advance instead of waiting to the last minute. It shows that he ultimately respects you and your time when paying attention to you and the small details.”

THE WIFE’s Guide to Los Angeles
April 18th, 2010 — About Me, Resturants, Things I Love, Travel
A few weeks ago after having tea with Cambrey Thomas, The Editor of “Detroit Girls About Town” she asked me to write an article about my guide/favorite things in Los Angeles. I was nothing short of delighted to participate. Here is the Article. -THE WIFE
DGAT had a lot of fun in Los Angeles last month, so much fun that our name almost became L. A. Girls About Town. While there, we lounged on the beach, ate at hip food trucks, and spotted David Hasselhof at The Apple Pan. We even stumbled upon a charming website called Taryn Cox The Wife. The site, run by native California girl Taryn Cox, is a guide to life as a wife. Although we’re betrothed to no one as of yet, DGAT likes her clear, practical, and decidedly stylish take on the world. In fact, we could not return to Detroit without asking Miss Taryn for her top 15 must do’s in L.A for Detroit girls. So, Detroit girls, read on. And be forewarned, this may inspire lust for a weekend jaunt to the city of Angels. - Detroit Girls About Town
1. Umami Burger 850 South La Brea Los Angeles, California 323 931 3000Since being introduced to Umami Burger, it has turned into a weekly craving/obsession. What sets Umami Burger apart from the others is that they don’t grind the meat until you order it. Umami means flavor and taste in Japanese…. They certainly have accomplished both with the tastiest burger in Los Angeles. My favorite is the Truffle Burger with sweet potato fries.. Make sure to indulge in a Raspberry Monkey Cake for dessert!
2. Hucklebrry 1014 Wilshire Blvd Santa Monica, California 310 451 2311Huckleberry, although on the Westside has been proven to be worth the distance for their delicious brunches and pastries that will transcend you straight to heaven! Don’t let the title fool you, but be sure to order the green eggs and ham for breakfast AND take a goodie bag full of sweet treats home for later. You definitely will not regret being over loaded with carbs and sugar.
3. Chateau Marmont 8221 Sunset Blvd Los Angeles, California 323 656 1010Ever since taking residence at this infamous hotel for six months, it has become my favorite recommendation for anyone visiting. The rooms are like mini apartments, most equipped with kitchens and living rooms so you’ll feel right at home. And the pool is perfect for lazy Sundays. Sit in the courtyard on any balmy California evening, its enchanting to enjoy dinner or drinks with friends under the warm nights sky.
4. Palihouse 8465 Hollaway Drive West Hollywood, California 323 656 4100The hotel is perfect for extended stays in Los Angeles. Even if your not staying here, it’s the perfect place to meet up with friends for cocktails in their charming lobby. Cozy sofas and a toasty fireplace make up the ambiance ( similar to Mercer Hotel lobby). Their restaurant, The Hall, is lovely for enjoying dinner under twinkling lights in the courtyard.
5. O! Burger 8593 Santa Monica Blvd West Hollywood, California 310 854 0134Not only does O! Burger have delicious burgers and fries, but what make me even more excited to eat there is that the whole restaurant is eco- friendly. Everything in the restaurant is made from renewable resources that are recyclable, compostable or bio degradable. All the ingredients are 100% certified organic! Even all the ice tea and sugar they use are all fair trade products. Good food and responsibility for the environment!
6. Joan’s on Third 8350 West 3rd Street Los Angeles, California 323 655 2285Joan’s on Third has become my go to place for coffee, tea and breakfast with friends. I call it the Los Angeles version of Dean and Deluca, with counters filled with delicious food to eat in or carry out -Sweet treats like morning buns (my personal favorite) and homemade cupcakes. It is the most “at home” place with a most welcoming staff. This is the perfect recipe to get lost in a conversation with your best friend.
7. Cecconi’s 8764 Melrose Avenue West Hollywood, California 310 432 2000Although on the pricier range of restaurants, Cecconi’s is definitely worthy of splurging on a glamorous dinner out. Get all dolled up and toast your friends with champagne while dinning out on the inviting patio. Indulge on hearty portions of Southern Italian pasta and pizzas.
8. Mozza 6602 Melrose Avenue Los Angeles, California 323 297 0100This is a do not skip restaurant in Los Angeles. Whether you dine at Pizzeria Mozza or Osteria Mozza, either will be an enjoyable feast. Call ahead as reservations book up fast. If you still do not have luck scoring a table, the bar at both restaurants is designed for walk in guests.
9. Comma Ca 8479 Melrose Avenue West Hollywood, California 323 782 1104One of my favorite french inspired restaurants in Los Angeles. The ambiance is very modern Parisian chic. A Must Order dish is the braised short ribs with pommes aligot.
10. Soho House West Hollywood 9200 Sunset Blvd West Hollywood, California 310 432 9200If you or a friend happens to have a membership, Soho House is a must for sunset dinner or drinks. With the most spectacular 360 view of Los Angeles, you’lll get lost in the twinkling lights of the city while sipping on tasty cocktails.
11. La Brea Bakery 624 South La Brea Avenue Los Angeles, California 323 939 8613If you find yourself in Los Angeles and in a rush, La brea Bakery is fantastic for a quick sandwich and chips on the go.
12. Bottega Louie 700 South Grand Avenue Los Angeles, California 213 802 1470Although located Downtown, Bottega Louie is worth the drive. The ambiance has a new york feel, with high ceilings and gorgeous male waiters serving as eye candy through out the evening. The down side is Bottega Louie does nott take reservations, but be sure to shop their market in front of the restaurant while waiting for a table. I always find great gourmet products like fig jam, macaroons and fresh flowers.
13. Milk Cafe 7290 Beverly Blvd Los Angeles, California 323 939 6455My favorite place for sweet treats like cookies, coffee and ice cream. Executive pastry chef Dave Baker has a creative knack for dreaming up unique ice cream flavors like Irish breakfast ice cream and red velvet cake batter ice cream. Also Be sure to try an Iced Chai latte, they make the chai syrup from scratch.

You’ll feel like your in the happiest place on earth, as its very reminiscent of Main Street in Disneyland. Charming for catching afternoon movies or shopping at stores like J Crew or Barney’s Co-op. Be sure to Wonder over to the farmers market for your choice of any food genre under the sun. My favorite are donuts from Bob’s Coffee and Doughnuts.
