Must See Film: “The Business of Being Born”
March 23rd, 2012 — Babies, Films, Mom
Birth: it’s a miracle. A rite of passage. A natural part of life. But more than anything, birth is a business. Compelled to find answers after a disappointing birth experience with her first child, actress Ricki Lake recruits filmmaker Abby Epstein to explore the maternity care system in America. Focusing on New York City, the film reveals that there is much to distrust behind hospital doors and follows several couples who decide to give birth on their own terms. And their follow up sequel “More Business of Being Born” explores and compares various childbirth methods, including midwives, natural births, epidurals and cesarean sections. A must watch for any newly pregnant women trying to figure out her birth plan. - Taryn Cox for THE WIFE
Parenting Must Read: “Bringing Up Bebe”
March 2nd, 2012 — Babies, Gifts, Mom
When American journalist Pamela Druckerman has a baby in Paris, she doesn’t aspire to become a “French parent.” French parenting isn’t a known thing, like French fashion or French cheese. Even French parents themselves insist they aren’t doing anything special.
Yet, the French children Druckerman knows sleep through the night at two or three months old while those of her American friends take a year or more. French kids eat well-rounded meals that are more likely to include braised leeks than chicken nuggets. And while her American friends spend their visits resolving spats between their kids, her French friends sip coffee while the kids play.
1. You can have a grown-up life, even if you have kids. Pamela writes: “The French have managed to be involved with their families without becoming obsessive. They assume that even good parents aren’t at the constant service of their children, and that there is no need to feel guilty about this. ‘For me, the evenings are for the parents,’ one Parisian mother told me. ‘My daughter can be with us if she wants, but it’s adult time.’ “
2. You can teach your child the act of learning to wait. Pamela writes: “It is why the French babies I meet mostly sleep through the night…Their parents don’t pick them up the second they start crying, allowing the babies to learn how to fall back asleep. It is also why French toddlers will sit happily at a restaurant. Rather than snacking all day like American children, they mostly have to wait until mealtime to eat. (French kids consistently have three meals a day and one snack around 4 p.m.) A [French mother] Delphine said that she sometimes bought her daughter Pauline candy. (Bonbons are on display in most bakeries.) But Pauline wasn’t allowed to eat the candy until that day’s snack, even if it meant waiting many hours.”

Mom Must Have: MomaRoo
October 6th, 2011 — Babies, Gifts, Mom
We’ve never seen a parent vibrate like a bouncy seat or swing like a swing. But we’ve seen thousands of parents scoop their little ones up in their arms and bounce and sway. And that’s what the mamaRoo does it imitates the way a parent moves with their child. Which is why this is the perfect baby gift for any new parent. Not only does the MamaRoo have 5 great settings, but the most useful setting duplicates a car ride… which we all know soothes babies to sleep in no time and makes this product priceless! - Taryn Cox for THE WIFE
Hundreds of people helped develop the mamaRoo. While medical experts pushed for speeds that would really stimulate a baby’s inner ear, some moms preferred slower movements. So we made the speed adjustable. Slow down for rest or speed up to play.
We love monkeys at the zoo, but not in our living rooms. Our plush toy balls are black and white on one side for infants. The other side is for when babies can see color (around 4 months). Perfectly sized for little hands, they easily pop in and out of the mobile so babies can chew…err…study them
The mamaRoo’s seat reclines to any position along its axis. The machine washable fabric removes easily. It’s as easy to clean as it is to use. Babies love white noise machines, so we built one in. Choose from one of five nature sounds, or for something a little more rockin’, connect any MP3 player. $199.99
Mom Must Have: The Origami
October 4th, 2011 — Babies, Mom
Power-Folding:
It’s the world’s first power-folding stroller: at the touch of a button, it folds itself. To open or close the stroller, just push that button and relax while the rest takes care of itself. So you won’t do it by accident, folding the Origami takes two (easy) steps: turn the activation ring, then push the button. There’s also a hidden lock switch to thwart those curious toddlers. Click HERE to watch Video.
LCD Screen:
The LCD interface makes the Origami so easy to use our grandmothers can do it (no offense, Grandma). Plus, the Origami knows things. All you have to do is look at the display to confirm it knows a child is in the seat, or how charged the battery is, or how far you’ve walked. Easy, convenient, and very cool.

THE HUSBAND: How to Take Care of a Pregnant WIFE
May 11th, 2011 — Advice, Babies, The Husband
In today’s society, it’s easy to forget that there any major differences between the genders. Until your wife gets pregnant. Then the difference between the sexes will yawn like a great chasm before you. While your wife spends nine months growing a baby inside of her, you will be left to watch from the outside; after you’ve made your deposit, your role in the baby-making miracle is complete. But while your biological contribution might be over, if you’re like me, you’ll still want to be part of the pregnancy process.
Being pregnant is tough. Seeing what Kate went through to bring my child into the world certainly gave me a greater appreciation for her and for womankind in general. As a man I wanted to be there for Kate as much as possible while she cooked the bun in her oven. I wanted her to be as happy and comfortable as possible, and I wanted to do whatever I could to help our little kiddo come out kicking and screaming like a champ.
A lot of guys find the pregnancy process a little bewildering. Not knowing what to do, they end up nervously backing away instead of stepping up the support when their women need them the most. So I decided to start a series for dads-to-be to discuss the ins and outs of this very cool but nerve-racking period in your life. Today, we’ll talk about how to take care of your wife while she’s with child. Then we’ll talk about how to get ready for the new arrival to come home, how to deliver a baby in an emegency (you never know!), and how to be an awesome coach during the birthing process.
How to Take Care of a Pregnant Wife
Respond appropriately to the news she’s pregnant. If you weren’t planning on the arrival of a bundle of joy, make sure you don’t respond in a way that shows you’re not excited about the news. Inappropriate responses would include: breaking down and crying tears of agony, making a face of disgust, or asking why she wasn’t using her birth control. You want your wife to feel confident and secure that you’ll be there for her during these trying nine months and that you’re willing to step up and be a great dad.
Read some books on pregnancy. The more you know about what she’s going through, the better equipped you are to empathize and know how to help. There are hundreds of pregnancy books to choose from. What to Expect When You’re Expecting is a classic and guides you through what your wife is experiencing during each step of her pregnancy. They have a section dedicated just to dads that has a lot of useful information. It also lays out the development of your baby throughout his/her incubation. I thought it was kind of fun to check the book to see when the baby lost his vestigial tail or his eyes moved from the sides of his head to the front where they belong.
Accompany her to doctor’s appointments. This serves three purposes. First and most importantly, it shows your wife that you’re with her all the way in the pregnancy. Second, you’ll know exactly what’s going on with her pregnancy and will be better prepared to help her. Pay close attention to what the doctor says at these visits. A woman’s memory takes a dive during pregnancy and she may be nervous and excited, so your wife might rely on you to remind her about which cheeses she’s not supposed to eat. Finally, seeing your baby’s picture, even when it looks like an indistinguishable lump, and hearing its heartbeat will help create a fetus/father bond. Even if you’re really busy at work, always make time for the doctor’s appointments.
Belle Heir
April 5th, 2011 — Babies, Kids
Belle Heir was created out of our love of fine vintage and in appreciation of the
care, quality and attention to detail that once went into the construction of clothing: hand-stitching, smocking, pin-tucks, pleating, embroidery and button-work. They have sought out the most unique and original pieces from this lost age of elegance and offer you these treasures to become your child’s own, one-of-a-kind keepsakes or beautiful gifts for those you love. Their focus is on clothing for newborns to five year olds, with an emphasis on fine cottons, linens, silks and soft woolens.
