10 Tips for THE WIFE: Hair Care

Tips: Hair Care

1. Oil – Don’t be afraid of oil! After washing your hair, use a small amount of dry oil on wet hair to make it more manageable. Also be sure to add a little more after it’s dry, leaving your hair silky and smooth. Dry oil will protect your hair from heat like blow dryers and flat irons. Try: Moroccan Oil, use Moroccan Oil Light for fine hair and the original formula for thicker hair.

2. Hydrate – Dry hair that feels and look brittle could be because your hair has too much protein.Use a mask once a week to hydrate hair. Try: Moroccan Oil Hydrate Mask

3. Clarify – Everyone, know matter what your hair type, should be using a clarifying shampoo. Clarifying shampoo’s have a bad reputation for drying out hair, when actually they will get rid of unwanted build up of product and dirt on your scalp. Use once a week for normal hair that is washed daily (or every other day) and once a month if you wash your hair once a week. Try: Malibu Goo Gone Shampoo.

4. Trims – Wives who want to grow out their hair can be weary of regular trims. When actually they are essential to keeping your locks healthy, strong and eliminating split ends. Get in the habit of getting your hair trimmed every 6 – 8 weeks.

5. Products – When choosing a shampoo and conditioner, choose a product that is paraben and sulfate free. Don’t be fooled by whats on the label… Just because the bottle may say “Color Safe” doesn’t mean that it is. Be sure to read the ingredients on the back and avoid ‘Sodium Laurel Sulfates’ or ‘SLS,’ and ‘Sodium Chloride.’ They are bad news and an extreme skin-irritating ingredient and strip hair of color and treatments. Parabens are chemical compounds widely used by the personal care industry as preservatives, they are controversial because of their endocrine disrupting qualities. Try: Pureology Shampoo and Conditioners

6. Keratin – Keratin shampoos and conditioners are a hair care products designed to strengthen hair as it cleans. The result is sleeker hair that is prone to less frizz, breakage and gives hair great shine. Try: Keratin Complex

7. Styling – Always make sure your hair is completely dry before putting a flat iron or curling iron to it. Your hair should never ‘sizzle’ or ‘crack’ when using styling tools. You wouldn’t grab a hot pan without pot holders, so why would you apply heat directly to your hair without protecting your precious strands? Heat protectants are essential when using heat source tools like hair dryers, flat irons and curling irons. Why? Because heat styling opens up the hair shaft, leaving strands susceptible to damage and even color loss. Heat protectants coat the follicle, keeping strands sealed and shielded. They provide topical thermal protection while maintaining necessary moisture in the shaft, promoting healthy texture, softness, elasticity, and shine. Try: Kerastase Nectar Thermique.

8. Blow Dyers –  Look for a blow dryer that is 1800 watts with ironic technology and a nozzle attachment to avoid burning hair. Using a higher quality blow dryer will decrease your chances of having hair that is brittle and frayed, resulting in stronger hair. Ionic drying diffuse negative ions, which cause the hair cuticle to trap moisture and eliminate frizz. On top of that, ionic dryers fight and eliminate static electricity in your hair. Also choosing a blow dryer with higher wattage will dry your hair much faster. Try: Babyliss Pro Volare Professional Luxury Dryer. Also Try: My Amazing Blow Dry Secret which dries hair in half the time, but leaves it silky and soft.

9. Color –  Hair color can fade quickly. To keep color staying true after you come home from the salon, add two teaspoons of vinegar to your shampoo the first time you wash it. Vinegar is a natural way to lock in color and works especially well for red heads.

10. Swimmers – Since Summer is around the corner, add a leave in conditioner to your hair before diving into the water. Chlorine can reduce the amount of natural lubricants in your hair, causing the hair cuticle to break or crack. Salt water can also remove these lubricants and cause your hair to become dry and brittle. You may be at even greater risk for this type of hair damage if you already color your hair or use high-heat styling tools. Don’t forget to wash hair immediately after swimming. I must have the driest, dullest, most frizzy hair as deep conditioners, cellophane treatments and Moroccan oil do not make my curls silky, shiny ringlets. I am always a wee bit envious of girls with shiny, sleek or frizz free curls.
