Last Monday, in honor of the celebrated Gossip Girl Monday, I had friend Nicole over for dinner. Lucky me when she showed up with my newly discovered favorite cupcakes! I’ve never really been much of a cupcake girl… I not one to turn them down, but would never go out of my way to go get one. But these Chocolate decadent wonders are another story. They taste and have the consistency of real homemade cupcakes with gooey frosting. And another delightful surprise….There’s even chocolate chips in the cupcake batter! These delicious treats can be found at Froma on Melrose. They only sell chocolate chocolate chip cupcakes with chocolate or vanilla frosting. Vanilla Cupcakes are available for special order. $3.50 Each.

April 18th, 2010 — About Me, Resturants, Things I Love, Travel
A few weeks ago after having tea with Cambrey Thomas, The Editor of “Detroit Girls About Town” she asked me to write an article about my guide/favorite things in Los Angeles. I was nothing short of delighted to participate. Here is the Article. -THE WIFE
DGAT had a lot of fun in Los Angeles last month, so much fun that our name almost became L. A. Girls About Town. While there, we lounged on the beach, ate at hip food trucks, and spotted David Hasselhof at The Apple Pan. We even stumbled upon a charming website called Taryn Cox The Wife. The site, run by native California girl Taryn Cox, is a guide to life as a wife. Although we’re betrothed to no one as of yet, DGAT likes her clear, practical, and decidedly stylish take on the world. In fact, we could not return to Detroit without asking Miss Taryn for her top 15 must do’s in L.A for Detroit girls. So, Detroit girls, read on. And be forewarned, this may inspire lust for a weekend jaunt to the city of Angels. - Detroit Girls About Town
1. Umami Burger
850 South La Brea
Los Angeles, California
323 931 3000
Since being introduced to Umami Burger, it has turned into a weekly craving/obsession. What sets Umami Burger apart from the others is that they don’t grind the meat until you order it. Umami means flavor and taste in Japanese…. They certainly have accomplished both with the tastiest burger in Los Angeles. My favorite is the Truffle Burger with sweet potato fries.. Make sure to indulge in a Raspberry Monkey Cake for dessert!
2. Hucklebrry
1014 Wilshire Blvd
Santa Monica, California
310 451 2311
Huckleberry, although on the Westside has been proven to be worth the distance for their delicious brunches and pastries that will transcend you straight to heaven! Don’t let the title fool you, but be sure to order the green eggs and ham for breakfast AND take a goodie bag full of sweet treats home for later. You definitely will not regret being over loaded with carbs and sugar.
3. Chateau Marmont
8221 Sunset Blvd
Los Angeles, California
323 656 1010
Ever since taking residence at this infamous hotel for six months, it has become my favorite recommendation for anyone visiting. The rooms are like mini apartments, most equipped with kitchens and living rooms so you’ll feel right at home. And the pool is perfect for lazy Sundays. Sit in the courtyard on any balmy California evening, its enchanting to enjoy dinner or drinks with friends under the warm nights sky.
4. Palihouse
8465 Hollaway Drive
West Hollywood, California
323 656 4100
The hotel is perfect for extended stays in Los Angeles. Even if your not staying here, it’s the perfect place to meet up with friends for cocktails in their charming lobby. Cozy sofas and a toasty fireplace make up the ambiance ( similar to Mercer Hotel lobby). Their restaurant, The Hall, is lovely for enjoying dinner under twinkling lights in the courtyard.
5. O! Burger
8593 Santa Monica Blvd
West Hollywood, California
310 854 0134
Not only does O! Burger have delicious burgers and fries, but what make me even more excited to eat there is that the whole restaurant is eco- friendly. Everything in the restaurant is made from renewable resources that are recyclable, compostable or bio degradable. All the ingredients are 100% certified organic! Even all the ice tea and sugar they use are all fair trade products. Good food and responsibility for the environment!
6. Joan’s on Third
8350 West 3rd Street
Los Angeles, California
323 655 2285
Joan’s on Third has become my go to place for coffee, tea and breakfast with friends. I call it the Los Angeles version of Dean and Deluca, with counters filled with delicious food to eat in or carry out -Sweet treats like morning buns (my personal favorite) and homemade cupcakes. It is the most “at home” place with a most welcoming staff. This is the perfect recipe to get lost in a conversation with your best friend.
7. Cecconi’s
8764 Melrose Avenue
West Hollywood, California
310 432 2000
Although on the pricier range of restaurants, Cecconi’s is definitely worthy of splurging on a glamorous dinner out. Get all dolled up and toast your friends with champagne while dinning out on the inviting patio. Indulge on hearty portions of Southern Italian pasta and pizzas.
8. Mozza
6602 Melrose Avenue
Los Angeles, California
323 297 0100
This is a do not skip restaurant in Los Angeles. Whether you dine at Pizzeria Mozza or Osteria Mozza, either will be an enjoyable feast. Call ahead as reservations book up fast. If you still do not have luck scoring a table, the bar at both restaurants is designed for walk in guests.
9. Comma Ca
8479 Melrose Avenue
West Hollywood, California
323 782 1104
One of my favorite french inspired restaurants in Los Angeles. The ambiance is very modern Parisian chic. A Must Order dish is the braised short ribs with pommes aligot.
10. Soho House West Hollywood
9200 Sunset Blvd
West Hollywood, California
310 432 9200
If you or a friend happens to have a membership, Soho House is a must for sunset dinner or drinks. With the most spectacular 360 view of Los Angeles, you’lll get lost in the twinkling lights of the city while sipping on tasty cocktails.
11. La Brea Bakery
624 South La Brea Avenue
Los Angeles, California
323 939 8613
If you find yourself in Los Angeles and in a rush, La brea Bakery is fantastic for a quick sandwich and chips on the go.
12. Bottega Louie
700 South Grand Avenue
Los Angeles, California
213 802 1470
Although located Downtown, Bottega Louie is worth the drive. The ambiance has a new york feel, with high ceilings and gorgeous male waiters serving as eye candy through out the evening. The down side is Bottega Louie does nott take reservations, but be sure to shop their market in front of the restaurant while waiting for a table. I always find great gourmet products like fig jam, macaroons and fresh flowers.
13. Milk Cafe
7290 Beverly Blvd
Los Angeles, California
323 939 6455
My favorite place for sweet treats like cookies, coffee and ice cream. Executive pastry chef Dave Baker has a creative knack for dreaming up unique ice cream flavors like Irish breakfast ice cream and red velvet cake batter ice cream. Also Be sure to try an Iced Chai latte, they make the chai syrup from scratch.
14. Larchmont Bungalow
107 North Larchmont Blvd
Los Angeles, California
323 461 1528
Larchmont Bungalow is located on the charming street of Larchmont (be sure to go on Sunday’s to walk around the Farmer’s Market) Larchmont Bungalow has prided its self on their creativity for meals. Order the red velvet pancakes or tequila french toast! You cant go wrong with anything you order, even the classics are delicious!
15. The Grove/Farmers Market
189 The Grove Drive
Los Angeles, California
323 900 8080
On any given sunny day be sure to check out The Grove. You’ll feel like your in the happiest place on earth, as its very reminiscent of Main Street in Disneyland. Charming for catching afternoon movies or shopping at stores like J Crew or Barney’s Co-op. Be sure to Wonder over to the farmers market for your choice of any food genre under the sun. My favorite are donuts from Bob’s Coffee and Doughnuts.

We’ve all visited Laduree and oh’d and ah’d over the gorgeously packed pastel macaroons, but what always sold me was the packaging not the taste. My favorite macaroons have always been from Yauatcha in London and the local patisserie ‘Paulette’ in Beverly Hills. Paulette Koumetz, the celebrated French pastry chef, that has a passion for reinventing the classic almond cookie infused with tastey ganache. Stroll into her shop just off Beverly Drive and the vivid hues of macaroons with have your mouth watering. Just one bite of my favorite Rose or Sweet Wedding Almond Macaroon and and you’ll be hooked! – THE WIFE

I discovered Larchmont Larder last year and ever since have been in love with their selection of home-style comfort foods. The larder has a similar feel to Joan’s on Third, counter tops lined with food to dine in or take out. It’s literally the perfect pantry for THE WIFE who in a panic for dinner and needs a night off from cooking. Make sure to try the meatloaf with wild mushroom gravy and the beet salad with apples and goat cheese. For those with a sweet tooth, take home a container of the vanilla bean apple sauce for dessert! – THE WIFE

The other day I was Babysitting family friend, 9 year old Lily, when she requested to go to MILK Cafe. While in MILK I ran into executive pastry chef, Dave Baker, who was telling us about an amazing new Ice Cream he Dreamt up. As soon as he said red velvet cake batter with cream cheese ice cream swirl my mouth started watering! And oh my God was it good! My heart has always belonged to Coldstone Creamery’s cake batter ice cream, But my new number 1 is this red velvet marvel. It’s available in pints in the Freezer section at MILK or for Special Order. So run don’t walk for this seasonal holiday treat!

Entrance to Bottega Louie
When Chelsea, My Best Friend, was turning 25, I already had it in my head I wanted to take her to new restaurant, Bottega Louie. Normally anything in Downtown LA would stop me dead in my tracks from trekking all the way down there. But in honor of the Birthday girl… I figured lets be outright adventurous!
Upon arrival we walked into the Restaurant only to discover they had the most adorable market place, shelves stocked with every kind of gourmet everything: jams, chutneys, sauces, oils, nuts, pastas, even freshly bundled flowers. On the counter tops food waiting to be boxed up for take out in fitting little pastel boxes (Resembling Laduree) Also every kind of pastry and sugary confection imaginable…. mini tarts, cakes, Macaroons, cookies, the list goes on. While waiting for our table we just stood trying to decide what to splurge on. I eventually chose lavender honey, apricot and fig chutney and Dark Chocolate Non Perils… My Favorite Chocolate Treat. Chelsea went home with an Assortment of Teas and Hot Chocolate.
After our Shopping spree in the lobby, we wandered over to the Bar Area for pre -dinner cocktails. The very sweet and accommodating bar tender mixed up a virgin moijito for me (since I’m allergic to alcohol) and a Fun birthday cocktail for Chelsea which coincidentally matched her gorgeous Coral Phillip Lim dress. Now that is noticing the details!
Finally it was time to be seated (they don’t take reservations) We were greeted by two of the most friendly and welcoming hostesses, which is rare to find females who are generally thrilled your dinning in their restaurant. Hahah! We sat down and took in the beautiful high ceilings and glowing ambiance. We also started to take notice to the fact that every waiter in the restaurant looked like a delicious male model straight off the runway. And most all of them had a flirty and sweet personality to back up their gentlemanly looks! Bonus! After dinning on Lasagna and Raviolis and Macaroons with a side of eye candy, I was shocked at how Reasonably cheap the Bill was! All and All a perfect evening out on the town! And to put the extra cherry on our evening, on the way out busboy said to us … “Thank you for decorating the restaurant with your beauty!”
I’ll definitely be back! – THE WIFE

Wives, Have I got a brunching, lunching and everything else in between spot for you! After hearing rave reviews from a few friends, I made the drive to Santa Monica for Brunch with my friend Jill. And Oh My Goodness was it worth it!! Just Hidden next door to Santa Monica Seafood is this wonderful little gem. Don’t be Threatened by the Long line to order, they manage to turn out your food and a table to sit at quite quickly. I ordered the green eggs and ham ( photographed below ) which don’t let the name fool you, its Thinly Sliced La Queria Prosciutto, Poached Eggs, Basil Pesto all on top of the most delicious and thick homemade English muffin. I about feel to the floor after taking my first bite! Not only was my breakfast delectable, but I also couldn’t help but order some sweet pasty treats to take home for later. A Morning bun and Raspberry Strudel Muffin. Which were probably the best breakfast treats I’ve had in Los Angeles since I lived here. This is Definitely a new favorite spot of mine, But the only downside being its all the way on the West Side. So for those of you Wives living in Santa Monica or Brentwood… I’m extremely jealous!
You can also take home fresh baked bread for the week, Perfect to fresh morning toast and making yummy sandwiches to send your kids off to school with!
Oh my Goodness… Just order one of everything, instead of trying to make a decision. Its impossible.. Everything is just SOOOO GOOD!

Considering how Gorgous the weather has been lately… A Woping 85 Degrees Today! My mom and I had a Delightful outdoor lunch at Lemonade. The modern twist on a nostalgic concept is part lemonade stand, part grade-school cafeteria—come lunchtime, you’ll grab a tray and slide it down the counter to examine your options. Unlike those early years, though, you’ll actually want to build a meal from what you see under the glass—you might find a Grilled Cheese with Ham and Quince on Pumpernickel, which could work with a Snap Pea and Edamame Salad and a Lemon Meringue Pie. With numerous vegetable options, salads, braises and stews, there is no shortage of options to choose from.
Once you’ve filled your tray with quirky, mouthwatering morsels, pay up at the central stand, where you’ll select from several varieties of the requisite house-made lemonade Favorites are Rosemary watermelon and Peach Ginger—these would have taken your childhood stand to the next level.

Shortly after the original Sant Ambroeus opened its doors in Milan in 1936, a devoted following emerged. This celebrated pasticceria and confetteria became the meeting place for the local intelligentsia, whether beginning their day with Sant Ambroeus’s legendary cappuccino and cornetto, savoring panini at lunch, or spending their evening enjoying refined cuisine in the restaurant’s elegant dining room.
We translated these old-world sensibilities of Sant Ambroeus to modern times, and imported our rich culinary traditions to three New York neighborhoods: the West Village, the Upper East Side, and Southampton. Each of our restaurants remains authentic to our Milanese origins, and we continue to serve our culturally inspired delectables in a casual yet elegant environment.
Sant Ambroeus is my favorite restaurant in New York. Every time I’m in the city, I have to eat here. You’ll feel right at home with their welcoming Maitre D’ Enzo. Thier food is perfection. Even if your not hungry, Sant Ambroeus is great place to catch up with friends over a cup of espresso or their amazing gelato!

Milk Cafe, Ice Cream Parlor and Bakeshop is my favorite place for the most delectable treats in Los Angeles. Its the perfect place to take kids for an after school treat, when they’ve brought home all A’s. Or an after dinner treat, If they’ve eaten all their vegetables. Owner and Chef Brett Thompson has created an amazing Cafe with not only yummy sweets, but savory foods as well. You’ll feel right at home with these comfort foods made to warm your heart a soul for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.
My Breakfast favorites include their Iced Chai Tea Latte, They make there Chai syrup from scratch. Milk’s pain o’ chocolate, tastes just like they make ‘em in France. Their Loaf cakes (Blueberry cornbread, banana-walnut, zucchini-walnut bread, pecan crumble coffee cake, candied carrot-cream cheese bread) are perfect to take home.
For Dessert make sure to gobble up all their fresh baked cookies (Chocolate Chip Cookies with or without walnuts, Ooey Gooey Double Chocolate Cookies, Snicker doodles). All of Milk’s Ice cream flavors are dreamed up by Chef Brett Thompson and Dave Baker, with Delicious and Interesting flavors like: Pumpkin Ice Cream and Thai Iced Tea. In addition to Ice cream, They also offer an assortment of Shakes, Floats and Malts. The Chocolate chip bread pudding with Vanilla Beam ice cream and Velvet Popper Cupcakes are a must.

Porta Via is one of my favorite places to go Lunching in La. Located in the heart of the Beverly Hills’ shopping district. Porta Via is a contemporary California Bistro serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Porta Via’s cooking philosophy is to start with the best seasonal organic ingredients and prepare them simply.
A regular at many of Southern California’s Farmer’s Markets, owner Peter Garland and staff hand-pick produce to ensure that only the best food is served at his restaurant. Wild caught seafood and “all natural” meats are brought in daily. The Daily Specials are always a must order,in addition to the Chicken Pillard. Although its not on the menu, ask specially for their delicous fresh berries and cream. The wine list includes nearly 150 wines from around the world, including a private consignment of mature Classed-Growth Bordeaux.
